Equanimity ~ the mind and body each affects the wellbeing of the other.

Regular meditation is an excellent stabilising influence. Here are some meditative thoughts to help you to achieve a state of equanimity.

  • May I be steady in this period of change.
  • May I be present in this period of difficulties.
  • May I stay centred in the heat of the moment.
  • May I be free from obsession with past or future.

Whenever you feel assailed by the trials of daily life, particularly in a crowded place such as a bus or train, you can restore your mental and physical equilibrium by practicing this calming meditation.

Don’t be afraid of the dark, it is only the light casting shadows.

It has been said that the brighter we shine, the more shadow we create. Sometimes these are shadows within ourselves, those darker areas that we may not want to know about. Becoming spiritually aware means facing those inner dreams, confronting them with gratitude, dealing with them and moving on. If we wish to commit to change, then we have help readily available. 

Sit quietly and as you relax with your eyes closed, breathe deeply and let go of any tension in your body with each exhalation. Invite your angel to stand by your side, imagine a black screen in front of you. Ask the angel to show you aspects of yourself that need work and watch the screen. You may see a full image rather like a dream, or simple objects; you may hear music or words or experience a certain feeling.

‘Fortune favours the bold’.

This has been the motto for many families, since the earliest occurrences. Conversely this may also be seen as a misleading prophecy, as many actions are thought brace only if they are successful; those that end in failure are often rated as foolish whether or not courage was required.

Now the little history bit done! This leads me onto people doubting themselves,. Doubt is often regarded as a negative experience that stands in the way of personal achievement and fulfilment. But doubt can be worthwhile when it helps you to understand that your actions might result in suffering, conflict or anguish.

Meditation helps you to combat self-doubt and the low self-esteem that may drive it, strengthening your confidence and resolve.

Frustration and impatience can easily turn to anger. By focussing on the causes of these emotions, rather than their consequences, you can work towards building the patience and understanding necessary for both a positive and happy life.

Do you need a little Joy in your life?

One of the most important purposes of meditation is to create a state of joy in the individuals who practice it. There are many paths to this goal, but the starting point for all is to be receptive to beneficial moral influences.

Since meditation is closely associated with the rituals of prayer and absolution, a religious building makes a good place for it. It should really be practiced at the same time each day, morning or evening.

Joy meditation

  • I shall purge myself of bad thoughts and habits such as selfishness and greed.
  • I shall show compassion for all those who are suffering.
  • The happiness of others is a source of pleasure to me.
  • May I show gratitude for all the good things in my life.

We cannot live in the past; it is gone.

Nor can we live in the future; it is forever beyond our grasp. We can only live in the present.

Mindfulness meditation doesn’t change life. Life remains fragile and unpredictable as ever. Meditation changes the hearts capacity to accept life as it is.

We use mindfulness to observe the way we cling to pleasant experiences and push away unpleasant ones.

Through recognising and realising the empty essence, instead of being selfish and self-centred, one feels very open and free.

Our vision is more obstructed by what we think we know than by our lack of knowledge.

The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part.


Book of Job, Chapter 42 (C. 700BCE)

This important passage in the Old Testament of the Bible reassures the faithful that they can be rewarded on Earth as well as in Heaven.

When God holds up Job as an exemplary model of behaviour, Satan suggests that the man is good only because he’s living a comfortable life – he’s rich and has a dutiful wife, sons and daughters. If God were to take away the foundations of Job’s happiness, the Devil claims, his base nature would become apparent. God allows Satan to test Job’s faith and the Devil afflicts him with a plague of boils. His three friends tell him that he has brought misfortunes on himself by being sinful (Job’s comforters’ is a term now used to describe people whose comments make a bad situation worse).

But Job keeps his faith ; he holds hard to the belief that since we receive good from God, we must also be prepared to receive bad things; as he says: The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.’ Moreover, Job is sure that he has done nothing to deserve this treatment and that all will come right in the end. It does, at the end of his trials, Job is amply compensated by God for his patience.

The Earth is to the sun, what mankind is to the angels

Without the sun the Earth would perish. Imagine the Earth without sunlight, without heat. Nothing would live. Humanity could not survive without light, but what of spiritual light? Meditation and sleep


Practicing meditation and deep breathing will help you to achieve a deep state of relaxation, which in turn encourages sleep and energy renewal. Lie down and let the following thoughts go through your mind.

  • I am still and within myself.
  • I am aware of every part of my body.
  • I feel my body’s contact with the mattress beneath me.
  • I can let go and feel no pain.

Try gentle meditation in a reclining posture to help you to get to sleep, especially if you are in pain. If you are restless at night, it may help to leave the bedroom and meditate elsewhere before going back to bed.

Outside the doors of study… angel awaits.

Sometimes, in striving to do our best, we become so obsessed with work and study that we forget we are spiritual beings in human form. Our journey is to bring knowledge gained into our spiritual life and our spirituality into everyday life.
